What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are cap-like restorations that are made to fit over the visible portion of teeth that lies above the gumline. They can be crafted from a variety of materials, including metal, porcelain, and ceramic, although most people choose to have them made from porcelain and ceramic because they closely resemble the appearance of natural teeth. They can be used to improve the look of severely misshapen or discolored teeth or to protect teeth that have been treated, like those with large cavity fillings or that have undergone root canal therapy.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The process of receiving your dental crown depends on whether you opt to get a CEREC one-visit crown or a traditional one that’s crafted in a laboratory. A one-visit crown can be completed in about two hours using our digital impression system and chairside milling machine. We’re able to create a blueprint that transfers to the milling machine to carve your restoration out of a solid block of porcelain. Once it’s complete, our team will secure it onto your prepared tooth.

If you opt for a traditional crown, we’ll need to prepare the tooth to capture an impression and place a temporary restoration to protect it until the permanent one arrives at our office. We’ll send the impression off to a trusted laboratory where they’ll craft the crown to our specifications and return it to us so we can cement it onto your tooth. This process typically takes about two weeks.
