According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 90% of adults that are over the age of 20 have had at least one cavity. Typically, you can spot tooth decay with the common warning signs, like brown staining and visible holes. But what if the cavity is between your teeth? Here are two ways to tell if you have an interproximal cavity, how they are treated, and what you can do to prevent more in the future.

How to Tell If You Have a Cavity Between Your Teeth

There are two ways to tell if you have a cavity between your teeth:

  • Unusual symptoms – When the cavity penetrates the enamel, it can result in discomfort when you chew and sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks. So, take note of any discomfort or abnormal symptoms, like gum inflammation.
  • Your dental team spots the cavity – At your biannual checkup, your dentist and dental hygienist will conduct a visual examination. If they suspect there is a cavity between your teeth, they will take X-rays and determine if tooth decay is present.

How Are Interproximal Cavities Treated?

Thanks to modern dentistry, interproximal cavities can easily be treated. Even better, you won’t have a dark metal spot drawing attention to your treatment – there are tooth-colored options that restore the look and function of your smile simultaneously! If the cavity is small, then a filling may be all that’s needed. If the damage is more extensive, then a root canal and dental crown may be the best solution. No matter what the case is, your dentist will work to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible while removing the diseased tissue.

7 Ways to Help Prevent Interproximal Cavities

Fortunately, cavities (including interproximal cavities) are largely preventable. To help protect your smile from decay, make sure to:

  • Floss consistently and daily
  • Brush for a full two minutes each morning and evening
  • Get a dental checkup and cleaning every six months
  • Don’t consume added sugar in excess
  • Quit unhealthy dental habits, like nail-biting and smoking
  • Eat mostly well-balanced, nutrient-dense meals
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day

Since cavities need to be treated quickly, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your dentist the moment you suspect you have one. That way, your oral health will be restored sooner rather than later!
