For many people, the holiday season is the busiest time of the year. Some people in specific industries need to spend more time at work; others need to plan for vacations and celebrations with friends and family. If you’re currently using Invisalign, it’s important to make sure that the hustle and bustle of the holidays doesn’t interrupt your treatment. Keep the following tips for Invisalign in mind while you’re getting ready for the happiest (and most hectic) time of the year!
Make Sure You’re Wearing Your Aligners Most of the Day
Some people forget to wear their aligners during the holiday season. Invisalign aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours every day, and not wearing them can substantially extend treatment time. It may help to set a reminder on your phone so that you remember to wear your aligners on a daily basis.
Keep the Storage Case with You at All Times
Some people put their Invisalign aligners in a napkin when eating a meal. As a result, the aligners may be thrown out with the napkin, forcing the patient in question to go to their dentist to get a new one. You can avoid such mishaps at holiday dinners by keeping your Invisalign storage case with you at all times so that your aligners remain safe whenever you eat.
Take the Time to Brush and Floss After Every Meal and Snack
After a hearty holiday meal or festive treat, you should always take the time to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before putting your aligners back in. The last thing you want is to trap food particles against your teeth where they can cause bacteria growth and decay. Bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss with you to holiday parties and any other gathering where you may be eating or drinking.
Know When to Take Your Aligners Out
While you do need to keep your aligners in your mouth as much as possible, there are times you absolutely need to remove them. For example, if you want to take a sip of hot chocolate or another warm beverage, it should only be after removing your Invisalign. Hot liquids can warp the plastic that the aligners are made out of, slightly bending them out of shape so that they start pushing the teeth the wrong way. Not only does this interrupt the Invisalign process, but it can cause you to experience pain when you switch to the next stage of aligners and find that your teeth aren’t in the proper position. Taking your Invisalign out before eating and drinking anything besides water can help you avoid such issues.
Your dentist can give you additional tips for taking care of Invisalign during the holidays. With everything else you have to do this time of year, following the right precautions will give you one less thing to worry about, and you’ll have one more reason to smile during the celebrations!
